American Rotation Program

Observership

As an international medical graduate preparing for the residency match, you may have thought about opting for an observership in USA. A number of IMGs often opt for and benefit from observership programs in USA.  So, what exactly is an observership program, and how is it different from other forms of clinical experience?

What Is An Observership?

An observership program can be best described as a medical internship for international students and graduates (IMGs) in which they join a medical team to observe specific areas of clinical care, research or particulars of medical practice in a U.S. healthcare setting. This means that they shadow the preceptor only and do not physically engage with any patients or advise on any cases. This program familiarizes international medical graduates to U.S. medical practices to help them gain experience and prepare them for residency. The typical duration of these programs in anywhere from two to four weeks per rotation or specialty but can be extended for longer duration. Observership programs in the USA are undertaken by students and graduates alike, looking to gain experience in a particular specialty, to fill gaps in their clinical education or by those who are not licensed to practice supervised medicine yet.

Observership Programs In USA

In the U.S. health care system, observers are restricted to watching and listening during patient rounds, physical examinations, medical and surgical procedures, teaching rounds, and conferences. This program has its own merits as it enables IMGs to familizarize themselves with the US healthcare system. Observership programs in the U.S. usually do not confer academic credit and are not a necessary prerequisite for residency programs.  After successful completion, the observer is eligible for a Letter of Recommendation.
